Prithvi festival day 9: Shakkar ke Paanch Dane

Mumbai: Day nine of the Prithvi Theatre Festival saw the Hindi play Shakkar ke Paanch Dane - A monologue written and directed by Manav Kaul. The play is about the character Raj Kumar who unravels the story of his unremarkable life in a nondescript village.

Manav Kaul says, “This play is about a guy from a village and he has a problem that he has to write one play of his life and he has five different people in his life and that's Shakkar ke paanch daane, 5 grains of sugar and he just has to write the poem.”

In spite of the play being performed over 50 times, the lead actor has not got rid of his nervous pangs before hitting the stage. Theatre Actor Kumud Mishra says, “Jab aap mujhe natak shuru hone ke pehle 3 bell ke pehle aap mujhe wings mein dekhenge toh aapko pata chelga kitna mushkil hota hai. Saas lena mushkil ho jata hai, saas aani mushkil ho jati hai, bahar unhone oxygen cylinder bhi rakha hua hai (When you see me back stage you will realise how difficult it is. I can't even breathe, that's why they have kept an oxygen cylinder in the wings).

Like its format, the play also boasts of a rather unsual inspiration.
Kaul says, “Because of the bad scripts, lakh of scripts, lakh of interesting direction, lakh of interesting theatre itself, which actually gave me this anger to do my own thing and build one group.
With only two days left for this celebration of theatre, we suggest you theatre lovers better grab your tickets.
